We’ve resisted e-bikes for years while waiting for the technology to improve. The one we were waiting for has finally come along. Which one is that? It’s a normal-looking, normal-riding bike with clean lines and simple, reliable operation. It’s the 2016 Raleigh Misceo iE (MSRP $3099; our price, $2699).
We know the easy-riding, highly versatile Misceo frame well, as we’re North America’s largest dealer of the belt-drive Misceo 4.0 i8. Raleigh has partnered with Shimano to be one of the first two bike brands in the US to offer the new Shimano Steps e-assist system.
With Steps, the motor is integrated directly into the crankset in one clean package, and that position–at the center of the bike and down low–is optimal for handling. The gears are all contained cleanly in the Shimano Alfine 8 internally geared hub, which is extremely reliable and virtually maintenance-free. Better, shifting is handled electronically by the Shimano Di2 system, which makes for the fast, crisp shifting even under load. You can also shift to or from any gear while you’re stopped at a red light, something you can’t do on most bikes. Shimano hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent stopping power in all weather, especially wet weather, and their pads are self-adjusting, further reducing trips to your local mechanic.
Bonus: you can power dynamo lights via the battery, so you can save hundreds of dollars vs a dynamo wheel build.
How does it ride? It feels like you’re riding a normal bike with a nice consistent tail wind at your back. Even when you’re pedaling uphill. The carbon fork, bigger tires, and very comfortable seat make this a very smooth ride, too. So you get a nice, and rare, combination of crisp performance and super comfort. The motor provides three levels of assist and it delivers in a smooth and subtle way. Other pluses: long range (75 miles in eco mode, about 40 in the strongest assist mode).
Racks and fenders are easily installed.
If you’re looking for a reliable, low-maintenance, all-weather bike with e-assist, this one’s a winner.
